Hey Heroes -
Spring is here, and blowing through the Hurley Compound far too fast. The biggest news around here was the Totality Event on April 8th, which you are probably tired of hearing about unless you were there. And whew boy, what an experience!
Right up until the sun went out I was like, “Yeah, I guess this is cool.” Then it was lights out, the Eye of Sauron appeared in the sky, and I was standing in the center of a 360 degree sunset/sunrise for nearly 4 minutes at 3pm on Monday. I thought I had seen a few eclipses.
I was wrong.
As a weary middle-aged person who’s Seen Some Shit, I found the totality extraordinary. I think a totality event is more powerful to adults than kids. To kids, everything is still new, wonderous. Adults, tho, have had a lot of wonder beaten out of us. And when you stand under a darkness you've never experiened before, a 360 degree sunrise/set all around, it gives you back that wonder.
And I sure could use some wonder in this world.
Now spring is in full effect here, and the yard is just… magical. Every year we add more permanent fixtures; this year it’s three new tomato trellises. Every year there are more bulbs, more perennials, more COLOR. When I realized we simply couldn’t afford to live anywhere else, and that my spouse needed to be close to people, I was like, “Fuck it. If I can’t live in the woods, I will MAKE the woods.” And I have.

Read an excerpt:
“Humans, what a mess. In many ways, I’d argue with my clients that it was less civilized to be an aristocrat in Louis the XIIII’s court, squatting over a chamber pot in the hall carried around by some servant, than it was to be part of building a grave for a temporary king and burning it down to mark the passage of time in the neolithic. I mean, one of those people was actually free.”
And finally, some photos from around the homestead:

As ever, be kind to each other, for each of us is fighting some kind of battle.
Best,
Kameron
